Students for Change was established by students who believed that there was a critical lack of ideas and imagination in our politics. For too long our national debate has been dominated by the out of date and the out of touch - career politicians who often care little for the problems that people face and have little knowledge about how to solve such challenges.
Subsequently, in July 2008 members of the organisation will travel to diverse corners of the country in an effort to involve the youth in a great process of debate and discussions. We will look to hear about the real problems that exist in society, and any ideas that students may have that can solve them. By uploading photos, videos and debate onto our Facebook group page, we will create a vast web of ideas which will truly link the youth of South Africa in a way that has never been done before.
Ultimately, this process will allow us to begin the process of crafting solutions to problems that are both local and international in nature. By keeping the priorities of students in mind, we can work to highlight the desperate need for additional student funding and mentorship. Furthermore, we will work with partners in the social and corporate worlds to design innovative programs that address problems such as the provision of free AIDS medication. Additionally, South African students can contribute to the global fight against climate change by developing and promoting strategies that limit the carbon emissions which our country releases.
This project will occur in tandem with our major social upliftment program for the year: the drive to assist talented high school learners with the daunting process of applying for university. Students for Change members will be equipped with the relevant documentation and application forms for this project, in addition to material related to the Conversation with the Nation.
Currently, we have started preparations for work to occur in areas across Gauteng and the Western Cape. Additionally, we are planning trips to Dukuza in KwaZulu Natal, Philippolis in the Free State and Cwebe in the Eastern Cape. If you would like to join one of these projects or have ideas about working in your area of the country, please contact us at studentsforchangeinsouthafrica@gmail.com
